Stories of Agricultural Mechanization in Bangladesh
This storybook highlights the transformative efforts and outcomes of the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia—Mechanization and Extension Activity (CSISA-MEA) in modernizing Bangladesh’s agriculture. With over 60% of the population employed in this sector, agriculture is vital to the country’s economic growth. Since 2019, CSISA-MEA has led the shift toward sustainable mechanization, fostering inclusive growth.
Implemented by CIMMYT in collaboration with iDE and Georgia Tech, the project promotes climate-smart technologies and inclusive practices. It focuses on three key areas: enhancing the competitiveness of local agricultural machinery manufacturing, building institutional capacity through youth skill development, and improving farmers’ access to machinery and services.
CSISA-MEA supports the agriculture-based light engineering industry through workforce training, private sector engagement, digital innovation, eco-friendly practices, research, finance access, and market linkages. Operating in the southwest, northwest and Cox’s Bazar in the southeast, the initiative strengthens agricultural resilience through technology, entrepreneurship, and policy. By increasing smallholder productivity, income, and food security, CSISA-MEA has laid a foundation for sustainable growth. Ongoing investment in mechanized solutions and capacity building is essential for advancing Bangladesh’s agricultural sector toward a more inclusive and technologically driven future.
